BILL HOWTONTOBIN ROTE
With Walter's 2020 debut, Rice has had 10 players see action in 2020, the most Owls to play in an NFL season in school history. Nine Owls saw action in 2015 to set a school record, but only eight were active for the opening weekend. Rice also had nine former players active in professional football between the NFL and AFL in 1961 and nine between the NFL and the All American Football Conference in 1948.
Answer—Tobin Rote and Bill Howton, teammates at Rice in 1949, were reunited with the Green Bay Packers in 1952 when Howton was drafted by the club in the second round of the NFL draft. At that time, Detroit hosted Green Bay each year on Thanksgiving and the duo faced the Tigers together through 1957 when Rote was traded to Detroit. Rote missed the game in 1953, but in four Turkey Day contests, they combined for 224 yards and four touchdowns. Their only win over Detroit came in 1956, when Rote threw for 301 yards and two scores, 53 of the yards and one of the touchdowns to Howton.
