HOUSTON — 12 home games, including an amended Conference USA schedule, highlight the 2020-21 Rice Men's Basketball schedule, announced Tuesday afternoon by Rice Head Coach Scott Pera.
Rice opens the season Thanksgiving weekend with the Thanksgiving Invitational at Incarnate Word. The Owls open the tournament on Nov. 27 against the Cardinals. The following day, Rice will take on Our Lady of the Lake.
Rice will open its home slate on Dec. 3 versus LeTourneau. Rice then goes to Sharp Gym to face Houston Baptist on Dec. 5. A week later (Dec. 12), Rice will travel to the Fertitta Center to face Houston.
The Owls will once against face HBU on Dec. 15, this time at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice will take to the road for the final time in non-conference play when it faces Sam Houston State on Dec. 19 before closing out its non-conference schedule two days later when it hosts Incarnate Word.
This season, Conference USA will move to a new 18-game regular season format for conference play that focuses on the health and safety of student-athletes. In this format, schools will play two games per visit at four select C-USA schools and host four select teams for a two-game series, while playing a rival opponent one time home and away.
Moving to this schedule format will significantly reduce the amount of travel during conference play, with the aim of minimizing the risks associated with COVID-19. Additionally, the final week of the regular season (March 5-6) may be utilized to re-schedule any postponed games.
Rice will open the conference season on Jan. 1 and 2 when it hosts UTSA before traveling to UTEP on Jan. 8 and 9.
The Owls will host Old Dominion (Jan. 15 and 16) before making its first trip outside the state of Texas when it travels to Birmingham to face UAB (Jan. 22 and 23).
Rice will then split a series with travel partner and C-USA regular season champion North Texas, first hosting the Mean Green on either Jan. 27 or 28 before traveling to Denton for a game on Jan. 30.
The Owls return home to host Southern Miss (Feb. 5 and 6), followed by a road trip to WKU (Feb. 12 and 13) and home games versus Marshall (Feb. 19 and 20). The regular season will conclude at Louisiana Tech (Feb. 26 and 27).
March 5 and 6 will be held open in case any games need to be made up from COVID-19 postponements.
The conference tournament will return to its familiar 12-team field that it has utilized for the past several seasons. The top 12 regular season finishers in conference play will qualify for the Championship, played Mar. 10-13 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco.
Game times and television information will be announced at a later date.
Due to guidelines set by Conference USA, Rice will be limited to no more than 15% capacity for all home games. Rice Athletics is currently working the Rice Crisis Management Team on a more detailed plan to allow fans inside Tudor Fieldhouse as well as additional guidelines to ensure fan safety at events. Further information will be communicated as soon as it is available.
2019-2020 season ticket members will receive first priority on tickets and can renew here. More information regarding renewals and seating updates will be e-mailed to season ticket members.
