HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's track and field team kicked off the indoor season in style on Friday at the University of Houston's Leonard Hilton Invitational. In total the Owls established nine personal records with three individual victories.
Sophomore thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir carried over her 2019 success by winning the shot put with a PR of 16.19m (53-01.50), which currently ranks 11th in the NCAA. She was joined in the winner's circle by senior All-American jumper Michelle Fokam, who recorded the fifth-best mark (13.05m/42-09.75) in the NCAA this season in the triple jump and was also the top collegiate finisher in the long jump (6.03m/19-09.50), which ranks 20th in the NCAA.
Riding the momentum of a breakout cross country campaign, freshman distance runner Grace Forbes continued to open eyes by shattering the Leonard Hilton 3000m meet record on Friday by almost 20 seconds with a finish of 9:27.19. Forbes' finish ranks third in the NCAA this year and topped the previous meet record (9:47.74) established in 2002.
Junior KC Nwadei set a pair of PR's by placing third in both the high jump (1.70m-43rd in NCAA) and triple jump (12.14m-41st in NCAA). Rice also received top three finishes from freshman thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan (2nd-17.27m) and sophomore Julie Perez (3rd-16.41m) in the the weight throw.
In the sprints, senior Hannah Jackson ran a 7.64 in the prelims of the 60m dash and was the fifth-best collegiate runner in the 200m (24.53), a time that ranks 28th in the NCAA.
"This was one of the best openers we've ever had," Rice women's T&F head coach Jim Bevan said. "We had so many highlights and our vaulters didn't even compete today, they'll go next week. I came into this season thinking we're going to be pretty good but you never know where you truly stand going into that first meet. It was nice to start with a bang."
The Owls will hit the track once again on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the Houston Invitational, hosted again by the University of Houston at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
