SAN ANTONIO – National power South Florida broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 60th minute and went on to record a 5-1 win over the Rice Owls soccer team at the UTSA Invitational Tournament Friday evening in San Antonio.
Rice suffered its second loss of the season to move to 2-2-0 on the season. South Florida improved to 3-1-0 overall.
South Florida held a 1-0 advantage at the intermission but Rice tied the contest in the 51st minute. Sophomore midfielder Delaney Schultz registered her first goal of the season off a corner kick. Two-thirds of the way through the contest the match was tied 1-1. The Bulls, however, proceeded to score four unanswered goals on the way to a 5-1 final.
"That was a great game for 60 minutes," said Rice head coach Brian Lee. "The wheels came off for four minutes, but we have lots of positive signs moving forward." The Owls are next in action on Sunday (Sept. 8) with a second tournament match. The Blue & Gray meet Horizon League foe Cleveland State at the Park West Sports Complex starting at 11 a.m.
