Men's Basketball Releases 2019-20 Schedule

HOUSTON — 16 home games and a trip to the Bahamas highlight the 2019-20 Rice Men's Basketball schedule, announced Wednesday morning by Rice Head Coach Scott Pera.
"We are excited to announce our 2019-20 schedule," said Pera. "The non-conference, once again, will feature a long line of quality opponents including opening night at Arkansas and Houston coming to Tudor Fieldhouse for the first time since 2013. We also are excited about the Island of the Bahamas Showcase in November. The schedule features 14 teams that won at least 20 games last year and nine that made postseason play. The home league schedule has league champion Old Dominion coming to Tudor in February. We can't wait to get started and feel the schedule will get our fans excited as we continue to build our program. See you in November as you help us pack Tudor this season."
Rice opens the season on the road for the first time in three years when it travels to NIT participant and former Southwest Conference foe Arkansas on Nov. 5. It will be the just the second time that the teams will face off since leaving the Southwest Conference.
The Owls will then open its home schedule with games on back-to-back days, beginning with Penn on Nov. 9. The following day, Rice will host Wayland Baptist.
Rice then goes on the road for a pair of games. The Owls will look to extend its record to 8-0 all-time against Northwestern State when it faces the Demons in Natchitoches, La., on Nov. 12. Rice then travels to UC Santa Barbara for the first time since 1973 on Nov. 16.
Rice returns home to host crosstown rival Houston on Nov. 19. It is the first time since 2013 that Rice will host the Cougars, who made the NCAA Sweet Sixteen last year.
Rice then takes to the Bahamas for the Isle of the Bahamas Showcase, Nov. 22-24. The Owls will open the tournament against Milwaukee. It will be just the second meeting between the schools and the first since the 2004 NIT. Rice will then face either Atlantic Sun champion Liberty or Morgan State. The final game will be against East Carolina, Evansville, George Washington or UMKC.
Rice then takes two weeks off before traveling to Beaumont to face Lamar on December 7. The Owls then close its non-conference schedule with three straight games, beginning with a Dec. 14 contest against crosstown foe Houston Baptist.
The Owls then host its annual Kid's Day game on Dec. 19 against St. Thomas. Following Christmas break. Rice closes its non-conference schedule versus Sam Houston State on Dec. 29, the 46th meeting in the series but the first since 1994.
Conference USA action begins on Jan. 2 when Rice travels to Huntington, W.V., to face College Basketball Invitational champion Marshall. It is the fourth time in the last five years that Rice begins C-USA play on the road. Two days later, the Owls will face travel to WKU.
Rice begins its C-USA homes slate on Feb. 9 against Florida Atlantic, following it up with a home game versus FIU on Feb. 11.
Rice then plays three road games in five days when it travels to Louisiana Tech (Jan. 16), Southern Miss (Jan. 18) and North Texas (Jan. 20).
Rice begins a three-game homestand on Jan. 23 when it welcomes UTEP before hosting UTSA (Jan. 25). The Owls close the homestand a week later when it hosts North Texas on Feb. 1.
The Owls head back on the road when it travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face UAB (Feb. 6) and Murfreesboro, Tenn., to square off with Middle Tennessee (Feb. 8). Rice then returns to Tudor Fieldhouse for a pair of games against conference champion Old Dominion (Feb. 13) and Charlotte (Feb. 15).
Following the Charlotte game, Rice will play four games against teams yet to be determined. For the second straight year, the teams will be divided into two groups of five (teams 1-5 and 6-10) and a group of four (11-14). During the final three weeks, teams will play within their respective grouping for the last four games of conference play. Home and away games within the groups will be determined by a preset formula. The game dates are set (Feb. 22, Feb. 27, Mar. 1, Mar. 4, and Mar. 7) with one date being a bye.
The Conference USA Tournament will be held Mar. 11-14 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. North Texas will host the tournament for the third straight year.
