
Russell In Second Place in Heptathlon at C-USA Outdoors

Totaled 3133 points on day one
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Junior heptathlete Zinedine Russell led the way for the Rice Owls women's track and field team by collecting 3133 points through the first four events of the heptathlon Thursday on day one of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
Russell, from Kingston, Jamaica, posted a pair of top-three finishes, tying for first in the high jump (1.70m-855 pts) and placing second in the 100m hurdles (14.40-923 pts). Russell closed the day by earning 589 points in the shot put (10.91m-5th) and 766 points in the 200m dash (26.36-8th).
Junior teammate Giulia Sportoletti also put forth a strong day one performance by totaling 3021 points, good enough for third place. The Seregno, Italy native established a personal record in winning the shot put with a throw of 11.74m (38-6.25) for 644 points. She also collected 818 points in a third place finish in the high jump (1.67m-5-5.75).
Charlotte's Amaka Awuruonye (3225 points) will enter Friday with a 92-point lead in the event with the long jump, javelin, and 800m remaining.
The heptathlon will pick back up on Friday starting with the long jump at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
