Owls garner 16 points on day two of C-USA Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Rice junior heptathlete Giulia Sportoletti earned C-USA All-Conference honors by placing third in the heptathlon to highlight the Owls' performance Friday on day two of the conference championships.
Sportoletti, from Seregno, Italy, set a personal best mark with 5152 points to give the Owls six key points. On Friday, Sportoletti finished fourth in the long jump (5.60m/18-4.50), second in the javelin (39.35m/129-1) and fifth in the 800m (2:25.75). Sportoletti improved upon her 11th place performance at last year's C-USA Outdoor Championships to earn all-conference honors for the first time in her career.
In the same event, junior Zinedine Russell placed fifth (5051 points) in the heptathlon, also establishing a personal best total and adding an additional four team points.
To conclude the evening, sophomore Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi placed fourth in her first 10,000m (36:32.98) race of the season.
Senior Dheryl Batts also gave the Owls an additional point by placing eighth (50.98m/167-5.00) in the hammer throw before flying back to Houston for graduation ceremonies.
Due to incoming inclement weather, the schedule for day three of the C-USA Championships was adjusted. The first events of the day will begin with the women's discus and the men's long jump, scheduled for a 8 a.m. (CT) start. The first running event will be at 10 a.m. with the women's 1500m preliminary race.
