Harrison, Perez also garner all-conference honors
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Rice junior Michelle Fokam claimed the Conference USA Outdoor long jump title for a second straight year for her sixth career conference title to highlight the Owls' performance Saturday at the C-USA Championships in Charlotte.
Fokam, who set a Irwin Belk Track record with her mark, won the event on her third attempt soaring 6.27m (20-7) just minutes before the skies opened up to a torrential downpour. Fokam will also be competing in Sunday's triple jump (9:30 a.m. ET).
The Owls also got a pair of All-Conference performances from both Julie Perez (discus) and Emily Harrison (pole vault). Perez bounced back from a Friday hammer performance in which she fouled on all three attempts by setting a personal best in the discus, recording a mark of 47.10m (154-6) to earn bronze and a spot on the medal stand. Harrison, from Haymarket, Va., also set a personal best by clearing 3.76m (12-4) in the pole vault to earn all-conference honors and was followed by teammate Kylie Swiekatowski (3.76m) for fourth place.
Freshman distance runner Ryann Helmers also gave the Owls a pair of points by finishing seventh in the 3000m steeplechase, setting a season-best time of 10:52.01.
Perhaps the most intriguing story of the day though came from junior sprinter Hannah Jackson, who arrived in the nick of time to compete in the 100m prelims. Jackson, who stayed back in Houston to graduate on Friday, was forced to catch an earlier flight Saturday morning once news had broke of the schedule change due to incoming inclement weather. Jackson's flight landed with just minutes to spare, but the Owls' top sprinter made it to check in just in time and then did what she does best, qualify with a time of 11.75. The Sulphur, La. native would later qualify in the 200m (24.01) and joined Alyssa Balandran (9th-4:39.71-1500m) for one of three Sunday finals.
Rice will enter Championship Sunday in first place overall (45 points) through seven scored events.
