Three Owls win individual titles in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Rice Owls women's track and field team had three athletes win individual titles and the team finished third overall with 93.5 points to close out the Conference USA Outdoor Championships Sunday at Charlotte.
Rice junior sprinter Hannah Jackson collected 18 points on her own, winning the 200m dash and placing second in the 100m dash. Jackson, from Sulphur, La., broke her own school record in the 200m with a time of 23.16 and in the process moved up to 19th in the NCAA West region. The victory was Jackson's third career C-USA title and that performance came on the heels of a finish of 11.59 in the 100m. In addition, Jackson ran the anchor legs in both the 4x100 (7th-46.82) and 4x400 relays.
Junior Michelle Fokam saved her best for last in the triple jump, winning her seventh career C-USA title in dramatic fashion. The Katy, Texas native had posted a jump of 13.32m on her third attempt, a mark that looked plenty good enough to win. However, UTSA's Danielle Spence recorded a lifetime best jump of 13.42m on her final attempt, leaving Fokam one last attempt to earn the win. Fokam responded with a lifetime best mark of 13.48m (44-2.75) which broke the facility record and currently ranks 13th in the NCAA.
The Owls began the day with freshman thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir winning the shot put title with a winning throw of 15.72m (51-7), which comes on the heels of a second place finish in the same event at the C-USA Indoor Championships.
Rice also received an all-conference performance from junior Zinedine Russell in the high jump, clearing 1.73m (5-08.00) for six points after placing fifth in the heptathlon on Saturday.
Host Charlotte claimed the women's title with 103.5 points, overtaking UTEP (102 pts.) with a victory in the 4x400 relay.
The Owls will next await to see who qualifies for the NCAA West Prelims, which will take place May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif.
