Fokam Advances to NCAA Championships

Grabs 12th qualifying spot in triple jump
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Rice junior jumper Michelle Fokam qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas by placing 12th overall in the triple jump Saturday afternoon at the NCAA West Prelims, hosted by Sacramento State University.
Fokam advanced to her second straight NCAA Outdoor Championships with a dramatic finish, jumping 12.85m (42-2) on her final attempt after fouling on her first two attempts. Fokam edged out Texas Tech's Chinne Okoronkwo (12.84m) for the final qualifying spot.
Looking to improve upon her 17th place finish (12.97m) at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships, Fokam will compete in the triple jump at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium on June 8 at 5:40 p.m.
Rice freshman thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir closed out a strong freshman season on Saturday by placing 24th in the shot put with a throw of 15.64m (51-3.75). Other Owls to compete at the NCAA West Prelims over the weekend included Dane Stolsig (28th-62.98m) and Charlie Card-Childers (48th-54.60m) in the javelin, Hannah Jackson (24th-11.89) in the 100m, Fokam (33rd-5.82m) in the long jump, and Reagan Olguin (1:52.73) in the 800m. Freshman Natan Rivera no heighted in the pole vault while Jackson was unable to start the 200m due to injury.
