COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike and sophomore center Nancy Mulkey are among 36 players who have received and are expected to accept invitations to attend the 2019 USA Basketball Women's Pan American Games Trials.
The Pan American Games Trials will be held May 16-20 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The trials will determine the 12-member roster for the 2019 U.S. Pan American Women's Basketball Team. The team members will return to Colorado Springs for training camp July 23-Aug. 5 before competing in the women's basketball tournament at the 2019 Pan American Games from Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru.
Ogwumike, who also received an invitation to the USA Women's 3x3 Nationals, became the first player in Rice history to be named C-USA Player of the Year in a season in which she helped lead the Owls to their first-ever C-USA regular season and conference tournament titles. The Cypress, Texas native averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds and was the only player in C-USA to rank in the top-10 in scoring, rebounding, and steals (1.7 spg). Last year's C-USA Newcomer of the Year, Ogwumike led all C-USA players and ranked 17th in the NCAA with 18 double-doubles.
Mulkey, who won gold at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and 2014 FIBA U17 World Cup, earned C-USA Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading the nation in blocks per game (3.91) and breaking the Rice single-season school record with 94 rejections. Mulkey, who was also named to the C-USA First Team and All-Defensive Team, helped lead the Owls to a C-USA Tournament title by winning the tournament's MVP honors. The Cypress, Texas native ranked third in C-USA (29th in the NCAA) in field goal percentage (55.2).
Ogwumike, Mulkey and the Owls advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005 and won a school record 28 games, while entering the AP Top 25 and USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll Top 25 for the first time in program history.
Players eligible for the 2019 U.S. Pan American Games and USA World University Games teams must be U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled as full-time college students with remaining eligibility for the 2019-20 academic year.
The USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee, chaired by George Washington University head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, is responsible for selecting the U.S. trial athletes. Suzy Merchant (Michigan St.) will lead the team as USA head coach, with USA assistant coaches Felisha Legette-Jack (Buffalo) and Vic Schaefer (Mississippi St.).
Ogwumike and Mulkey become the first Owls to receive invitations to the U.S. Pan American Games Trials. They join an illustrious list of Pan American Games participants, which includes Cynthia Cooper (1987), Nancy Lieberman (1975 & 1979), Cheryl Miller (1983), Kelsey Plum (2015), Dawn Staley (1995), Breanna Stewart (2011 and 2015) and Sheryl Swoopes (1995).
