Owls win nine events in home finale
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's track and field team closed out their home portion of the 2019 outdoor season in style on Saturday at the 16th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight, winning nine events overall in front of the home faithful.
Junior All-American Michelle Fokam played a role in three different victories for the Owls. The Katy, Texas native won both the long jump (6.34m-20-09.75) and triple jump (13.27m-43-06.50) and ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x100 relay team (Camille Little, Hannah Jackson, Charlsea Lamb) that set a season-best time of 46.33.
Rice began the day by getting a victory from Giulia Sportoletti in the heptathlon, totaling 5062 points to edge out second place teammate Zinedine Russell (5041 points). Both those marks rank first and second, respectively, in Conference USA. Sportoletti won three events in the heptathlon, including the javelin with a throw of 40.41m.
Freshman thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir continued her stellar season with a season-best winning throw of 16.13m (52-11.00), the top mark in C-USA and ranked 29th in the NCAA.
Junior vaulter Kylie Swiekatowski established a personal record in the pole vault with a winning clearance of 3.82m (12-06.25), which ranks third in C-USA. Also establishing a PR was freshman thrower Julie Perez in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 54.37m (178-04) for the sixth-best distance in C-USA.
Later in the evening, junior sprinter Hannah Jackson won the 200m dash (23.42) and finished second overall (first collegiately) in the 100m dash (11.78). In addition, recording victories for the Owls was Hannah Bablak in the 800m (2:14.91) and Ryann Helmers in her 3000m steeplechase debut (11:12.72).
Freshman Alyssa Balandran also posted an impressive performance in the 1500m, finishing second overall with the top collegiate time of 4:39.99, a season-best performance.
The Owls will be off next weekend before returning to the track on May 3, splitting competition at the Air Force Twilight, Arkansas Twilight, and Tom Tellez Invitational (UH) as the final tune-ups before the C-USA Championships, May 9-12 in Charlotte.
