FRISCO, Texas — Marshall connected on 53.6% from the field and 13 three-pointers as Rice saw its season come to a close with an 82-65 loss in the first round of the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Tournament, Wednesday night from the Ford Center at the Star.
What Head Coach Scott Pera Had to Say
"Any time a season ends, with a group of kids that you enjoy being around and love coaching, it hurts. When you have guys in Dylan (Jones, (Oliver Xu) and of course Jack (Williams), who have played their last game and you see the pain in their faces, it's just never a fun night when the season ends like this. We didn't put our best foot forward, which is disappointing. Obviously, all the credit goes to Marshall and how well they played. They came out cooking and have been on a roll. We got hit by a freight train."
The Story
Rice started off slow, missing its first four shots while turning it over four times as Marshall raced out to a 9-0 lead. Robert Martin finally got Rice on the board with a three-pointer five minutes into the game and Jack Williams followed with a jumper, but an 11-3 run over the next four and a half minutes gave Marshall 21-8 lead. After a jumper by Williams, the Thundering Herd went on a 10-1 run, taking its largest lead of the half, 31-11. Rice was able to pull within 13 points with a 9-2 run, but Marshall scored eight of the final 11 points as Rice went into halftime trailing 41-23. Marshall opened the second half on 13-4 run. After trading baskets, the Thundering Herd scored seven straight points to take its largest lead of the game, 67-35, midway through the second half. The Owls got no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
