Rice Falls in Double Overtime to WKU, 92-85

HOUSTON — Rice made just two field goals in the final 17:38 of the game as the Owls saw fell 92-85 in double-overtime to WKU, Thursday night from Tudor Fieldhouse.

"It was a hard-fought college basketball game. (WKU) made a few more plays than us to separate in the second overtime. We couldn't stay with them. It's a credit to them. I'm proud of our guys. I'm proud of their effort. I'm proud of how hard we're working. But, we're not there yet. We're going to get there, but we're not there yet. We had a period in regulation when they went 1-3-1 (zone) that we just didn't handle very well. We have to handle it better and we have to learn from it."
The Story
Rice trailed 44-42 at the half. The teams split the first 12 points of the half. Rice then scored 13 straight points while going on a on a 24-7 run to take its largest lead of the game, 70-57, with 7:39 to play. However, the Owls went cold, missing their final eight shots of regulation while turning the ball over six times as WKU went on a 14-0 run to take a 71-70 lead with 1:02 to play. Chris Mullins made one-of-two free throws with five seconds to play to send the game into overtime. The teams started the overtime period by trading three-pointers. Mullins again made one-of-two free throws before the Hilltoppers made a jumper. Mullins made a pair from the free throw line, but a jumper followed by two free throws gave WKU an 80-77 lead with 27 seconds to play. Ako Adams hit his seventh three-pointer of the day with 15 seconds to play to send the game to double-overtime. The second overtime period started with the Hilltoppers scoring the first five points. The teams then traded a pair of free throws. After Quentin Millora-Brown made one-of-two free throws, WKU made four straight, pushing its lead to eight with 14 seconds left and sealing the game.

Rice shot 39.0% from the field and 32.3% from three. WKU shot 43.6% from the floor and 38.5% from three. Rice was also outrebounded, 50-to-47.

• Rice fell to 9-15 on the year and 4-7 in Conference USA.
• Rice is 2-4 all-time against WKU and 1-3 in games played in Houston.
• Rice connected on 10 three-pointers, the fourth straight game with at least 10 three-pointers and the 11th time this year.

• With two blocks, Millora-Brown now has 28 on the season to move past Tony Barnett (1984-85) for 14th-place in a season in school history.
