2019 All-Conference USA Football Team
Rice linebacker Blaze Alldredge, who is among the national leaders in tackles for loss and led the Owls with 102 tackles, heads a group of 11 Owls honored by conference coaches in voting for the 2019 All Conference USA Football Team. Results of the voting were released by the conference on Tuesday.
Alldredge was named to the first team while punter Chris Barnes was named to the second team. Myles Adams, Shea Baker, Brian Chaffin, Treshawn Chamberlain, Justin Gooseberry, Nick Leverett, Campbell Riddle, Brad Rozner and Austin Trammell earned honorable mention recognition.
One of two first-team selections who were also C-USA football all-academic honorees, (Harrison Bryant of FAU), Alldredge started all 12 games and posted career-bests in tackles (102), tackles for loss (21.5) and sacks (4). He closed out the regular season tied for the C-USA lead and for second nationally with 21.5 tackles for loss, just missing the school record of 22 set by Brian Womac in 2017. He was credited 16 with solo tackles for loss and shared credit on 11 others, and his 27 total plays resulting in a loss led the nation. Alldredge reached double figures in tackles three times—all in conference action-capping the season with a career-best 14 tackles at UTEP. He was named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football All-Texas College Team of the Week four times during the season and was added to the Nagurski Award Watch List at midseason.
Barnes made the most of the opportunity to return to Rice for an additional season and replace 2018 with C-USA Special Teams Player of the Year Jack Fox. Prior to the season, Barnes was selected as a co-captain by his teammates and went on to finish second in C-USA with a 44.8 yard average on 35 punts, which ranks sixth in school history. He combined with Adam Nunez to rank 18th nationally with a 41.1 yard net punting average at the end of the regular season, one yard better than Rice averaged in 2018 with Fox. He had two punts of better than 60 yards, including a career best of 66 yards at UTSA, and had punts of 50 or better in seven of 11 games. He also took over placekicking duties over the final eight games and converted eight of his last nine field goal attempts, including a career best from 48 yards vs. North Texas.
Adams was also selected as a co-captain prior to the season and went on to post career highs with 42 tackles while being one of five players to start all 12 games this year. Baker, Chaffin, Gooseberry and Leverett anchored the Owls offensive front wall and made a combined 43 starts. Chamberlain was third on the team with a career-high 64 tackles and tied for the team lead with two interceptions and seven passes defended. Riddle was a consistent performer on special teams with 100% ball placement on 66 punt snaps and 42 snaps on field goals and PATs. Rozner led the Owls with 770 yards receiving and five touchdown receptions and was second with 55 receptions. His 770 yards and 55 receptions are the most in school history for a first-year Owl. Trammell, who was the third team captain in 2019, led the Owls in receptions (60), all-purpose yards (1,168), kick returns (299 yards) and punt returns (130 yards). He became only the second player in school history to have back-to-back seasons with at least 60 receptions.
