FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas used a 31-8 run midway through the first half to take control of the game as Rice fell to the Razorbacks in its 2019-20 season opener, 91-43, Tuesday night at Bud Walton Arena.
The Story
After Arkansas took an early 6-0 lead, Rice scored eight straight points off a pair of Ako Adams three-pointers to take an 8-6 lead. However, the Owls missed nine of their next 11 shots as UA went on a 19-4 run to take a 25-11 lead. Layups by Josh Parrish and Trey Murphy III brought the deficit to single digits. But, Rice missed six of its final seven shots in the half, as the Razorbacks closed the half on a 14-3 run to take a 39-19 lead at the break. After an Arkansas basket to start the second half, Adams converted a three-point play. But, the Razorbacks went on a 22-3 run to take a 63-25 lead and put the game out of reach.
The Stats
Rice was held to just 28.6% from the field and 8.0% from three. Arkansas shot 55.2% from the floor and 40.0% from three. Rice was outrebounded, 45-27, and Arkansas scored 29 points off 27 Rice turnovers.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"Obviously, I'm extremely disappointed. Give Arkansas a ton of credit. They're a very good team and very well coached. I thought we were in a place where we were ready to compete and play our best tonight. Obviously, that didn't happen. We had a little stretch where we made it a nine-point game midway through the first half. But, we couldn't get a shot to go and it started affecting our defense. We turned the ball over to give them some easy buckets and from there it snowballed. We seemed to lose our confidence a little bit on offense, which is a shame. But, a lot of that was caused by them. We just have to get back to work and get better."
