No. 18 Owls Remain Unbeaten in C-USA, Sweep UAB

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The No. 18 Rice Owls volleyball team used an efficient offense to record their 12th consecutive win with a Sunday road sweep (25-13, 25-22, 26-24) at UAB.
Rice (21-1, 10-0) continued their magical season by notching their 16th sweep of the season and have yet to lose a single set in a true road match this year.
The Owls outhit UAB (11-12, 3-7) .337-.168, committing just 12 errors on 104 attacks. Sophomore middle blocker Anota Adekunle paced the Owls' offense with a match-high 13 kills on 21 attacks for a hitting percentage of .524. Junior outside hitter Nicole Lennon (11 kills) joined Adekunle in double-figure kills and totaled 13 digs for her team-leading 14th double-double of the season.
Senior setter Adria Martinez also registered a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs. Senior libero Lee Ann Cunningham reached a milestone by surpassing 2,000 career digs with a match-high 16 helpers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
The Owls dominated the Blazers with a 25-13 victory, hitting a sizzling .481 as a team with 15 kills and only two errors. Rice never trailed and they used a 9-1 run early on to seize control of the set. Lennon, Adekunle, Grace Morgan, Kassidy Muse, and Ellie Bichelmeyer all posted three kills apiece in the set.
Set 2
Adekunle stepped her game up with six more kills in set two to help lead the Owls to a 25-22 victory. The Owls continued to shine on the offensive end, hitting .378 with 16 kills and only two errors. The Blazers went on a 4-1 late run to pull to within 24-22 but Lennon put the set away with her seventh kill of the match.
Set 3
The Blazers led for a majority of set three and even held a 24-21 advantage but the Owls held on set point on three straight plays to pull even and then won the set 26-24 after a kill from Lennon and a Blazer attack error.
Up Next
The Owls return to Houston next weekend for their final two home matches of the regular season, starting Friday, Nov. 8 with Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m. Rice will then host currently No. 23 WKU on Senior Day with a pregame ceremony set to honor the six seniors on the Owls.
