Owls Sweep UTSA in Bounce-Back Victory

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 21 Rice Owls volleyball team put together a dominating performance by sweeping (25-16, 25-16, 25-17) the UTSA Roadrunners Thursday evening to remain unbeaten on the road this season.
Rice (23-2, 12-1) bounced back from a loss last week to No. 19 WKU by outhitting UTSA .367%-.097%. The Owls totaled 43 kills on 90 attacks, led by a match-high 12 kills from junior outside hitter Nicole Lennon. Sophomore middle blocker Anota Adekunle had an efficient night with 10 kills on 17 attacks to go along with a match-high five blocks.
Rice setters Adria Martinez (19 assists) and Carly Graham (17) helped orchestrate an Owls' offense that posted a 76.5% sideout rate.

"This was a statement match for our team. We took some quality information from both matches last weekend and learned from them. The focus they had was more of a professional approach and it was nice to see how clean we played. We will get some rest and regroup again for a very important match against UTEP."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Rice never trailed in the opening frame and hit .355 for the set in a 25-16 victory. Lennon got out to a hot start with eight of Rice's 15 kills while defensively the Owls limited UTSA to a .088 hitting clip.
Set 2
The Owls continued their offensive surge by hitting .464 with 15 kills on 28 attacks and only two errors, leading from start to finish in another 25-16 win. Rice executed early and often, jumping out a 14-3 advantage and never looked back.
Set 3
Rice jumped on the Roadrunners early again, claiming a 6-1 lead. Adekunle helped put the match away with six kills in the set as the Owls completed the sweep with a 25-17 victory.

The Owls will conclude the C-USA regular season on Saturday, Nov. 16 at UTEP. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT).
