Junior sprinter grabs top 200m time in C-USA

HOUSTON - Rice junior sprinter Hannah Jackson highlighted the Owls' performance at this weekend's Houston Invitational, winning the 200m dash in a time of 23.83 and just narrowly missing out on setting a Yeoman Fieldhouse record (23.41). Jackson won her third career indoor 200m race by claiming the top time in C-USA this season. Jackson was also the fifth-best collegiate finisher in the 60m dash with a time of 7.61, after qualifying at 7.57.

Freshman Ryann Helmers bested the five-minute mark in the mile by finishing in 4:59.96 for a second place finish while Mary Claire Neal placed sixth in the same event with a time of 5:09.11.

In field events, freshman thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir was the second-best collegiate finisher in the shot put with a heave of 15.22m (49-11.25) while Dheryl Batts set a new personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 17.11m (56-01.75) on Friday. Junior Camille Little also had a solid day in the long jump, placing fifth overall with a jump of 5.65m (18-06.50).

The Owls will be back in competition Feb. 1-2 at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M.
