WT&F: Helmers Shines in 3000m Debut

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice freshman distance runner Ryann Helmers placed seventh overall in her 3000m debut Saturday at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. A freshman from Sanderson, Texas, Helmers finished the race in 10:03.12, which is the second-best time in C-USA this season.
In other distance events, sophomore Mary Claire Neal set a personal best time of 4:59.74 in an eighth-place result in the mile.
In the field, junior Camille Little placed second overall in the triple jump (12.32m) while freshman Erna Gunnarsdottir finished third in the shot put (15.23m/49-11.75).
The Owls will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Nashville, TN for the Music City Challenge, which will take place Feb. 8-9. Rice will also send competitors to the Don Kirby Invitational Feb. 8-9.
