Rice Falls to UTSA in C-USA Road Opener

SAN ANTONIO — A 29-9 UTSA run early in the second half doomed Rice as it fell, 95-79, Thursday night from the UTSA Convocation Center.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"I thought (UTSA's) peripheral guys played very well. They had 22 assists to eight turnovers and we had 11 assists to 15 turnovers. They were better. They deserved to win. They played a very good game with veteran guys. We had some opportunities to cut into it. But, we just didn't play our best. If you don't play your best on the road, you're not going to win, especially against a good team like UTSA. The key is; do we learn from this, do we grow from this and do we prepare well for Saturday."
The Story
Rice scored the opening basket but UTSA scored 10 of the next 13 points to take an early 10-5 lead. Rice tied the game at 10, but the Roadrunners went on a 12-4 run over the next 1:54 to lead, 22-14. The game went back-and-forth, as Rice would get close before UTSA extended its lead. With the Roadrunners leading 36-27 with 4:09 to play in the first half, Rice went on a 7-2 run to get within 38-34. But, UTSA hit two straight threes as it closed the half on an 8-3 run, taking a 46-37 lead at the break. The Owls opened the second half scoring seven of the first nine points to pull within 48-44. However, the Roadrunners went on a 29-9 run over the next 6:34 to take their largest lead of the game, 77-53. Rice would not go away, scoring 16 of the next 20 points to cut the deficit to 81-69 with 5:14 to play. However, that's as close as it would get, as the Roadrunners would push their lead back to 19.
The Stats
Rice shot 44.4% from the field but just 25.0% from three. UTSA shot 49.3% from the floor and 38.7% from three. The Owls also connected on 70.8% from the free throw line and outrebounded the Roadrunners, 38-to-35. But, UTSA scored 22 points off turnovers to Rice's eight.
