Four-Game Homestand in September Highlights 2019 Football Schedule

The Rice Owls will open their 15th season of Conference USA football on September 28 when they host Louisiana Tech, closing out a stretch of four consecutive home games in the month of September.

Rice opens Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren's second season with a Friday night road game at Army on August 30. The Owls return to open a four-game homestand with Wake Forest on September 7, followed by Texas, Baylor and LA Tech on consecutive September Saturdays. The games against Wake Forest, Baylor and LA Tech will be played at Rice Stadium, while the Owls and Longhorns will meet at NRG Stadium.

This marks the first time Rice will host four consecutive home games since 1986 when the Owls kicked off the season by welcoming Lamar, SMU, Southwest Texas (now Texas State) and Texas to Rice Stadium.

In addition to their opening four-game homestand, the Owls will also host Southern Miss (October 26) and Marshall (November 2) before wrapping the home season on November 23 vs. North Texas.

The Owls C-USA road schedule opens with a pair of games (October 5 at UAB and October 19 at UTSA) bracketing a bye week on October 12. After a second bye week on November 9, the Owls will travel to Murfreesboro, Tennessee on November 16 for their first meeting with Middle Tennessee. The road slate concludes on November 30 at UTEP.

Rice's seven home opponents were bowl eligible in 2018 and combined for a 56-34 (.622) record last year. The road slate is highlighted by a pair of 11-win teams in 2018 (Army & UAB), with the five teams combining for a 34-31 record. Overall, the Owls will face nine bowl teams (seven who won titles) this fall and their 12 opponents finished 2018 with a 90-64 record (.584).

Conference USA announced the 2019 schedule today, however it is important to note that all conference games are subject to date changes and some dates are expected to move in the coming weeks in order accommodate national television. A schedule of televised games will be released at a later date.
