Free throws by freshman Quentin Millora-Brown and junior Ako Adams in the final 30 seconds gave Rive an 87-85 victory over CB Alcobendas in Rice's first game on its Spain trip.
Graduate Jack Williams led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Drew Peterson had 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Josh Parrish had 13 points, freshman Chris Mullins had 10 and Millora-Brown added seven boards.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, as both teams led by as many as nine points, with Rice leading by double-digits. Rice went down early, trailing 19-10 in the first eight minutes. But the Owls were able to cut the deficit to three at the end of the first quarter.
After tying the score at 24, Rice went on a 10-0 run to take its largest lead of the game. But with Rice up by nine, CBA made four free throws in the final minute of the second quarter to cut Rice's lead to 40-35 at halftime.
The Owls again extended its lead to nine early in the third quarter. However CB Alconbendas battled back to take a six-point lead before two Payton Moore free throws sent Rice into the final stanza trailing 64-60.
The fourth quarter was an exciting affair. Rice tied the game at 67 before Peterson gave Rice the lead with a three-pointer. The teams then exchanged blows, trading leads over the next three minutes. Back-to-back baskets gave CBA a four-point lead. However, Rice twice tied the game, setting up Millora-Brown to take the lead Adams to seal the win at the line.
The day started with Madrid is giving us a little taste of home as the weather here feels like Houston. It's been over 100 degrees the past two days and today we were under an extreme high temperature warning.
After breakfast at the hotel, the team went on a walking tour of Madrid. Our tour guide took us to the Plaza Mayor, which is the center of town that connects Madrid in all directions. We then headed to the Royal Palace. What an experience that was! The entire Palace houses 3,300 rooms and we saw less than one percent of them. But what we did see was amazing.
On the way back, the guys ran into a soccer team made up of players around the world. Most of them were from Europe, but there was one player from New Jersey who immediately recognized us as being from the United States. It was great to see the two teams embrace each other.
