Three players lead Owls with 15 points
HOUSTON — Rice scored 56 second half points to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 90-76 victory over crosstown foe St. Thomas in its lone exhibition game.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"For an exhibition game, I think we got out of it what we wanted to. It was a slow start (and) I expected that. There were a lot of guys that haven't put on a uniform in a while. That's why we scheduled this game. I was proud of our response in the second half and it's always nice to win the game."
The Story
Rice struggled out of the gate, making just one of its first 10 shots. The teams battled back-and-forth as they traded leads in the first half. However, Josh Parrish hit a half-court three at the buzzer as Rice took a 34-32 lead into halftime. St. Thomas opened the scoring in the second half. But three straight threes from Ako Adams and Jack Williams gave Rice a 10-point lead.
The Turning Point
With Rice leading 54-46 midway through the second half, the Celts scored seven straight points to pull within one. However, the Owls answered right back. After a Payton Moore layup, Rice got three-pointers from Chris Mullins and Robert Martin, followed by a layup from Martin as Rice used a 10-0 run over 1:24 to push its lead to 64-53.
The Stats
Rice got double-figures from four players, led by a pair of freshmen. Drew Peterson had 15 points and six rebounds and Chris Mullins had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Ako Adams had 15 points and five rebounds and junior Robert Martin had 14 points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Graduate transfer Jack Williams added a game-high 10 rebounds.
Notes
• This was Rice's 11th straight win in exhibition games.
• Rice faced St. Thomas for the ninth straight year. However, the previous eight meetings all came in the regular season.
• 12 players saw action for the Owls with 10 playing at least 10 minutes.
• Rice shot 40.5% from the field and 37.5% from three.
• Rice also connected on 78.6% from the free throw line.
