HOUSTON -- Rice's Marie-Claire Schillinger was one of 14 Conference USA student-athletes to receive the league's Winter Spirit of Service Award, C-USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod announced on Friday (April 6).
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award recognizes the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant public service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service Award will be presented three times throughout the season, with Friday's honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field.
Whether it is competing in the pool, succeeding in the classroom, or her volunteer efforts throughout the greater Houston community, Rice junior swimmer Marie-Claire Schillinger has been a difference-maker. Not only is Schillinger is a five-time C-USA individual champion who has set school and C-USA records competing in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, she has represented Rice and the conference at the NCAA Championships as well as the U.S. Olympic Trials. In the classroom the native of Orinda, Calif., has maintained a 3.77 grade point average pursuing a double-major in Kinesiology and Psychology. She has been named a Scholar All-America by the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and is a two-time C-USA Academic Medalist. Her busy life as a student-athlete, however, has not stopped her tireless community service work. So far Schillinger logged close to 120 combined hours working with campus E.M.S., the city Houston's Hurricane Harvey Relief effort, nearby Mark Twain Elementary School, and the Rice University Women's Athletics Advisory Board, to name just a few of the groups where she has served as a volunteer.
