Recap by: John Sullivan, Rice Athletics (jsully@rice.edu)
Rice senior Kaitlyn Swinney won her second individual event in as many days to lead the Rice swim team at the 2018 CSCAA National Invitational Friday evening at the United States Naval Academy.
For as strong as Swinney was winning the 200-IM on Thursday's opening night, she was even more dominant on day two. The senior from Fort Bend, Texas, broke her own school record with a winning time of 4:11.43. Swinney was third after the lead butterfly leg, but she zoomed into the lead with a strong backstroke and was never threatened from there. She was a full four seconds ahead of second place and was just off the meet record set in 2015 (when she finished in second place in the event).
Swinney wasn't the only point-winner in the 400-IM. Fellow senior Jaecey Parham was sixth overall with a time of 4:19.85. Rice also posted a host of points in the 200-freestyle as senior Alicia Caldwell finished second overall (1:47.51) and freshman Ellery Parish was tenth (1:48.93) to give the Owls some scoring punch.
After two full days of action the Owls are in third place in the team standings with 294 points. Conference USA rival FIU, the 2018 league champion, leads the meet with 320.5 points while the University of Denver is in second (306 points). SEC foe South Carolina is fourth (239 pts.)
Swimming in her home state of Maryland, senior Kiley Beall scored for the Owls with a season-best 54.81 to place sixth in the 100-yard backstroke. The freshman duo of Nicole Limberg and Brittany Bui finished 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.10), and 15th in the 100-yard butterfly (54.92), respectively.
The Rice team of Hanna Huston, Parish, Lindsay Mathys and Caldwell combined to finish second in the 800-freestyle relay with a time of 7:17.54. Earlier in the meet the Owl foursome of Beall, Limberg, Bui and Lauren Rhodes were fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.43).
