Russell Leads Owls to Showdown Split

Conrad Russell posted a pair of wins in singles as the Rice men's team split a pair of matches on the first day of the 2018 C-USA Showdown at the McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio on Friday.
Russell defeated UAB's Anru Fourie, 6-4, 7-5, to put the Owls ahead to stay in a 4-2 defeat of the Blazers in the Owls opening match while his 7-5, 6-1 win over Chung Han Tsai of Southern Miss allowed the Owls to close to 3-2 vs. Southern Miss before USM closed out the match with a clinch on court five.
Southern Miss completed the first day of action with a 2-0 mark, while Rice and UTSA are each 1-1 and UAB is 0-2 in the third annual gathering of the schools in a regular season round robin event.
The Owls will wrap up play on Saturday morning when they take on UTSA at 10 a.m. They will be on the road again next weekend with a doubleheader next Saturday against Tulane and New Orleans. They wrap up the regular season schedule on April 15 when they host SMU at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
