Owl Senior Earns League Honor For Fifth Time In Her Career
Over the weekend Schillinger scored big for the Owls at the three-day, 12-team, 18-event Phill Hansel Invitational meet. Not only did the senior win the 100-yard breaststroke over a starting field of 45 entries, her prelim qualifying time of 1:00.63 is the best mark in Conference USA so far this season and the No. 28 time in Division I. The Orinda, Calif., native was also fourth overall in the 200-breaststroke with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:12.45 that is also the best mark in C-USA.
As the league's three-time defending individual champion in the 200-breaststroke, and a two-time conference-winner in the 100, Schillinger is a key component swimming the breaststroke leg on the Owls' medley relays. At the Hansel Meet, Rice's 400-medley relay finished second overall with a time of 3:39.39 while the 200-MR was third with a steady 1:40.75. Both Rice medley relay times are now the fastest in C-USA this season. At the meet Schillinger also contributed to Rice's team scoring in her secondary events. She swam a 23.65 in the 50-yard freestyle that is one of the Top 10 times in C-USA. Her 2:05.57 in the 200-IM is the No. 11 time in the league this year.
It is the fifth time in Schillinger's career to be named the C-USA Swimmer of the Week. She is also the third Owl this season to earn the C-USA Swimmer of the Week Award, following teammates Ellery Parish (Oct. 17) and Brittany Bui (Oct. 24). FIU's Rachel Foord was named the C-USA Diver of the Week.
The Rice swim team is next in action on December 1 as part of a major in-state double-dual meet. The Owls compete against No. 3 ranked Texas A&M and Big 12 power TCU before taking a break for the University's final exams period.
