Sophomore Standout Posts Second-Fastest Mark In School History
After five swimming events and the first of three diving events, Rice holds fifth place in the team standings with 243 points. Meet host Houston owns a commanding lead 12-team meet with 490 points. Tulane is second with 290 points, New Mexico is third (281 points) and Nevada is fourth (278). The Owls lead Washington State (158), Colorado State (146), Northern Colorado (143), Air Force (121), Vanderbilt (120), Incarnate Word (96) and North Texas (54).
Parish zoomed to the win in the 500-free over a starting field of 70 competitors. Her finals time of 4:43.66 is the second-fastest mark in the history of the Rice swim program, just behind Brittany Massengale's school record 4:42.13 set at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Senior Hanna Huston was eighth (4:54.53 in the finals after a season-best 4:51.38 in the morning prelims). Sarah Nowaski (4:56.32) and Claire Therien (4:58.98) also scored for the Blue & Gray with season-best marks to finish 15th and 16th, respectively.
After freshman Marta Cano-Minaro likewise scored big for the team winning the consolation finals of the 200-individual medley with a 2:01.64 that was actually the sixth-fastest time of the night overall. The international standout from Spain also swam the lead leg of the Owls' 200-free relay (1:33.59, 7th) and then came back to anchor the 400-medley relay of Rabea Tzenetos, Marie-Claire Schillinger and Brittany Bui that placed second with the third-fastest mark in school history (3:39.47).
The freshmen tandem of Becca Evans (23.22) and Cano-Minaro (23.55) both swam a season-bests in the 50-freestyle to place tenth and 18th, respectively. The Hansel Invitational continues on Saturday with prelims starting at 10 am. Event finals are scheduled for 6 pm. The meet concludes with two more sessions on Sunday.
