Rice senior punter Jack Fox has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award, which is presented annually by the Augusta Sports Council to the nation's top collegiate punter. Fox is the second Rice punter to be named a Ray Guy Semifinalist, joining Kyle Martens in 2011.
The three finalists for the 2018 honor will be announced on Tuesday, November 20. The winner will be announced live on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 6 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Formal presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be made at the Best of the Gridiron Football Banquet in Augusta, Georgia in January of 2019.
Fox is averaging 45.3 yards on 66 punts this year. His average is the best in the country for punters with at least 60 kicks this year, while his 66 punts and 2,989 yards rank second. He has a career-high 21 punts of 50 yards or better, including at least one in 10 of 11 games this year, and has placed 23 of his punts inside the 20. He is third in the country with 12 punts inside the 10 this year and has just 10 touchbacks in his 66 punts.
He was honored as the award's national punter of the week after averaging 47.3 on seven punts at North Texas, five of them inside the 20, one inside the 10. He also launched a career-long effort of 76 yards which was the longest punt by an Owl since 1990 and is the seventh longest of the college football season. Fox has also been cited four times this year as a member of Ray's 8, which is the award's weekly list of finalists for the punter of the week award.
When called on to punt 12 times vs. UAB (tying a school and C-USA record), Fox averaged 49 yards on the day to set a C-USA record with 588 yards. He has extended his personal best punt distance three times this year, including a 76-yard effort at North Texas.
In the Owls season-opening win over Prairie View A&M, Fox held the Panthers in check in the second half to set the stage for the Owls rally which ended with his 23-yard field goal as time ran out. He placed four of five second half punts inside the 10, downing balls at the six, four, seven and the last at the two yard line, which led to the Owls taking over at their 44 for the drive to his game-winning field goal.
With Rice trailing 28-19, he nailed a career-best, 63-yard punt late in the third quarter to the PVAM seven that set the stage for a sack and fumble that led to a Rice touchdown.
In addition to his punting efforts, Fox has also both passed and run for first downs this season while lined up to punt, and set up a touchdown by recovering a fumbled kickoff return.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt a is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
