BIRMINGHAM, AL - Rice senior forward Jasmine Goodwine tied her career-high with 28 points and in the process became the 16th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points in the Owls' 62-61 overtime loss at UAB Sunday afternoon.
The Owls (9-6, 0-4) were outscored 12-11 in the extra five minutes and nearly erased a five-point deficit in the final 30 seconds after consecutive three-pointers from Maya Hawkins. However, UAB (8-6, 1-2) was able to inbounds the ball with a little over a second remaining and ran out the clock.
Rice led 45-38 in the fourth quarter with 8:51 remaining but UAB slowly chipped away at the lead and was able to tie the game at 50-50 on a three-pointer from Rachael Childress with 54 seconds remaining in regulation.
In OT Goodwine gave the Owls a 52-50 advantage but UAB responded with the next eight points to go up 58-52 with 1:02 to go. Goodwine then tied her career-high with her second made three-pointer of the afternoon, bringing the Owls to within 58-55. UAB would make just enough free throws the rest of the way to fend off the Owls.
To go along with her 28 points, Goodwine snagged a season-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and Shani Rainey joined her with her first double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) before fouling out in OT.
Goodwine etched her name into the history books at the 3:30 mark of the first quarter when she connected on an elbow jumper off a pass from Kendall Ellig, giving her exactly 1,000 career points. The Killeen, Texas native resumed to score nine more points in the opening half for a team-best 11 points, including a three-pointer right before the halftime buzzer that gave Rice a 28-26 lead at the break.
Rice shot just 30 percent (9-of-30) from the field in the opening 20 minutes but managed to make 7-of-8 attempts at the free throw line and held a 9-5 advantage in second chance points over the Blazers. After UAB outscored the Owls in the opening quarter (13-10), Rice responded with an 18-13 edge in the second period.
The Owls will conclude their three-game road trip next Saturday when they travel to Denton to face North Texas at 3 p.m. from the Super Pit.
