Four Owls on the Rice swim team are scheduled to open the new 2016-2017 season at first-ever CSCAA Collegiate National Open Water Championships in Lawrence, Kansas, on Saturday (Sept. 17).
Rice sophomores Sydney Franzen and Hanna Huston, along with true freshmen Sarah Nowaski and Claire Therien, are four of the 38 women competing in the first open water championship for collegiate swimmers. The 5,000-meter event is sponsored by College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and hosted by the University of Kansas at Lone Star Lake near Lawrence, Kan. One individual from the respective women's and men's events will be crowned a CSCAA national champion. Teams of three will compete for a first-ever open water team title.
"This is the inaugural collegiate national open water championship," said Rice head coach Seth Huston, now in his 15th season at the helm of the program. "With open water swimming gaining in popularity and now being an Olympic event, it is only natural for this type of event to be offered collegiately. We are excited to race this weekend and believe we can compete to win."
