Adam Gustafsson picked up a straight set win, but his Rice teammates could not hold off a fired up Lamar Cardinal lineup as the hosts downs the Owls 4-1 at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in Beaumont on Saturday.
The Cardinals took the early lead by capturing a wild doubles point that opened with Rice's Tommy Bennett and David Warren upset LU's 41st ranked duo of Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer. Lamar struck back to win on three and then the point by winning on court two in a tiebreaker.
After Lamar extended the lead to 2-0 with a win on court two, Gustafsson put the Owls on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sebastian Santibanez. But Feucht and Schweizer rebounded from their doubles loss to pick up wins on courts one and four to clinch the match.
The Owls will be back on the courts on Sunday when they join with the Rice women in hosting their third simultaneous dual of the 2016 season. The men will host #26 SMU while the women face off against #28 Tulsa.
