Schillinger Makes Olympic Trials Qualifying Time

AUSTIN - Rice freshman Marie-Claire Schillinger reached an Olympic Trials qualifying time on the final day of action at the Arena Pro Swim Series Sunday evening in Austin.
Schillinger first qualified for Sunday's D-Finals of the 100-meter breaststroke, and then improved on her prelim time of 1:11.96 with an even faster 1:11.21 in the evening session. The the true freshman from Orinda, Calif., finished 28th among a starting field of 72 entries that included both professional and elite college swimmers.
Her finals mark also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials later this summer, something she had already achieved prior to her enrolling at Rice. Last month at the Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio, Schillinger registered comparable short-course yards 100-breaststroke time of 1:02.73 that is the third-fastest mark in school history.
The Rice swimmers are next in action at the annual Quad Meet on January 29-30 across town at the University of Houston. The annual four-team, triple-dual meet features the Owls going head-to-head with U.H., LSU and Tulane.
