Solid Day For Schillinger

AUSTIN - True freshman Marie-Claire Schillinger posted Rice's best performance on the opening day of the Arena Pro Swim Series Friday afternoon in Austin.
With an Olympic Trials qualifying time already achieved prior to her enrolling at Rice, Schillinger reached a U.S. Nationals standard Friday in the 200-LCM breaststroke. The rookie from Orinda, Calif., swam a 2:37.37 in the event's morning preliminaries. She finished 34th among an elite starting field of 68 entries that includes professionals who are preparing for the 2016 Olympics Trials. Last November at the University of Houston Invitational, Schillinger swam short-course yards 200-breaststroke time of 2:14.73 that is the second-fastest mark in school history. Owl sophomore Kaitlyn Swinney was 48th in the 200-breaststroke prelims with time of 2:40.18.
The Owls also had two entries in the 400-LCM freestyle. The freshmen duo of Hanna Huston and Sydney Franzen were 60th and 79th (respectively) among a starting field of 85 entries with times of 4:24.46 and 4:30.40.
Sophomore Alicia Caldwell posted a 59.02 in the 100-freesyle. The Sydney, Australia, native was 106th among a field of 128 entries.
The meet continues through Sunday. Saturday's events, featuring morning prelims and evening finals, includes the 200-freestyle, 200-backstroke, 50-freestyle and 400-individual medley. All events are in long-course meters.
