
Hodge Leads Owls in Midland

Lindsey Hodge survived a loss in her first set of the fall to bounce back with wins in her first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas on Friday.
Hodge shook off a first set loss to down Anna Spengler of Lamar 4-6; 6-3; 7-5 and then returned to the court to defeat Devin McCluskey of Penn State 7-5; 6-0 to set up a quarterfinal matchup against Angeles de los Rios of Texas-Arlington on Saturday.
Freshman Emily Smith split her first two matches, winning her collegiate debut with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over UAB's Pardis Kianoush before falling to Elizabeth Thoms of UTA 7-6; 6-2. Junior Alison Ho dropped a 6-2, 6-1 verdict to Texas Tech's Felicity Malthy while freshman Fernanda Astete fell to North Texas' Maria Kononova 6-2; 6-3.
In doubles action, Ho and Smith, who came in as the top seed, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 win over North Texas's Nastya Shestakova and Alexis Thoma. Hodge and Astete fell to Jessica Birowski and Thoms of UTSA.
Second-day play begins at 9 am on Saturday at the Racquet Club of Midland.
