Katherine Ip battled her way to a three-set win over Virginia's Skylar Morton as the Rice women's tennis team concluded play at the the 2015 Kitty Harrison Invitational Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Sunday.
Ip rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the opening set to win 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 to give the Owls their lone win in five singles matches against players from Virginia. Savanah Durkin and Emily Smith each extended their matches to three sets against Virginia as did Solo Zinko, who faced LSU's Skylar Holliday.
Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said she was pleased with the results of the weekend of action, which wrapped up the Owls fall schedule.
" We had a lot of hard fought, very competitive matches today," Schmidt said. "We definitely improved this weekend. Our team really embraced the ‘mock dual format' and now we will continue to use what we have learned this fall and work hard in training to be as best prepared as possible when we head into the dual match season."
Rice will open their 2016 schedule on January16 when they compete in the UCF Quad tournament in Orlando, Florida. They will open the 2016 home dual season on January 24 against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
