Owls Doubles Shines in Weekend Opener

The Rice women's tennis team won five of six doubles matches and split six singles matches in the first day of action at the 2015 Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Rice took two of three doubles matches against Elon and swept all three meetings with William & Mary.
In singles, host North Carolina took three of four singles matches with Rice. Freshman Emily Smith picked up the Owls' lone win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory of the UNC's Cassandra Vazquez.
Savannah Durkin and Fernanda Astete each one in singles meetings against Middle Tennessee. Durkin downed Britt Haxley, 7-5, 6-4 while Astete raced past Costanza Magazzini, 6-2, 6-2.
Action for the Owls will shift to Duke's Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday. They will face South Carolina in doubles at 10 a.m. and the return to take on the singles lineup from Penn State at 11:30 a.m.
