IRVING, Texas – Rice sophomore Kaitlyn Swinney has been named the C-USA Swimmer of the Week for Oct. 27-Nov. 2, the league office announced Tuesday (Nov. 3) from its headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Swinney posted the fastest two individual times in the conference so far this season while winning a total of four individual events competing in dual meets last weekend against C-USA foe North Texas and nationally-ranked SMU. On Saturday (Oct. 31) against No. 21 ranked SMU, Swinney won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:24.32 that is best in the conference and among the Top 50 times in the nation. The day before against North Texas, Swinney won the 200-IM with a 2:05.03 that is the best in the league so far. The native of Fort Bend, Texas, also won the 200-backstroke vs. SMU with a time of 2:03.25. In her very first time to race in the 500-freestyle this season vs. North Texas, she won the event with a steady 5:01.17 that is one of C-USA's Top 5 marks. Swinney also went a season-best 58.15 to take second in the 100-backstroke (to Owl teammate Julie Litver).
The Rice swimmers are back in action on November 19. The Owls compete at the University of Houston's annual Phill Hansel Invitational, a three-day multi-team meet across town at the UH Recreation and Wellness Center.
