Rice Wins Team Title at UH Invitational

HOUSTON -- Sophomore Alicia Caldwell won the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:57.19 to help the Rice swimmers take home the team title of U.H.'s Phill Hansel Invitational Saturday night across town.
Rice won the 10-team meet with a final total of 1,121 points. Tulane was second with 879 points, followed by UC-Davis (861 points) and meet host Houston (778) to round-out the top four spots.
Caldwell was one of three Owls to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships on the meet's third and final day. Sophomore Kaitlyn Swinney made the `B' cut with a 1:58.74 to take fourth place in the same event.
True freshman Marie-Claire Schillinger was also fourth in the 200-breaststroke with a provisional 2:14.73 that was a little more than one second Rice's school-record. Fellow freshman Dani Gordon scored for the Blue & Gray in the event with a 2:17.50 to place sixth overall.
Freshman Hanna Huston finished third in the rugged mile with a Rice-best time of 16:37.76. Sophomore Kaitlin Benjamin was fifth in the 200-butterfly with a steady 2:02.54. Kiley Beall also made the championship final and was eighth (2:05.23).
Jaecey Parham placed sixth in the 100-freestyle after a 51.00 in the morning prelims. She was also part of the Owls' 4x100 relay that finished second with a time of 3:23.59.
