HOUSTON – The Rice sophomore tandem of Kiley Beall and Alicia Caldwell were sound and solid in helping lead the Owls' swim team to a second place finish at the 2015 Rice Invitational meet on a rainy home Saturday at the Competition Pool.
Steady rain in the Houston area, and a factor when competing at Rice's outdoor pool, did not detour Beall and Caldwell. The Owls' sophomore duo contributed big points to the swimmer's second place finish in the four team, two-day, 18-event meet. Beal won the 100-yard butterfly over a field of 25 entries with a season-best mark of 57.27 that is the best in Conference USA so far this early season. Beall also scored for the team with third place finish in the 200-butterfly with a steady 2:04.23.
Caldwell not only swam the lead leg on three Rice relays, the international standout from Sydney, Australia, finished second in three individual events – the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.35) and both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with times of 56.13 and 200.90, respectively. Both backstroke marks are the top times in the conference and the fastest recorded by an Owl at home in the Competition Pool.
True freshman Hanna Huston likewise notched the fastest Rice time in the team's home venue with a 17:08.37 to take second overall in the mile. The rugged distance race covering a full 1,650 yards came down to a dramatic sprint over the final 25 yards where Arkansas' Aiden Lister slipped past Huston by just 14-one-hundredths of a second.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Swinney continued a solid weekend of racing with a 4:25.81 in the 400-individual medley to lead a 2-3-4 Rice finish with Shelly Patton (4:29.84) and Huston (4:30.07). Freshman Marie-Claire Schillinger followed a second place in the 100-breaststroke (1:05.10) with a third in the 200-breaststroke (2:20.06).
Each of Rice's relays, the 200-medley and the 200- and 400-freestyle, notched second place finishes. The Owls totaled 945 points for second place in the final team standings. SEC power Arkansas won the meet with 1,162 points. Crosstown rival Houston was third with 743 points and regional foe Incarnate Word was fourth with 548.
The Rice swimmers are back in action next with a pair of home dual meets next weekend, Oct. 30-31. The Owls host C-USA opponent North Texas on Friday at 4 pm, and longtime rival SMU on Saturday at 11 am.
