HOUSTON – Rice sophomore Kaitlyn Swinney finished second overall among a field of 35 entries in the 200-yard individual medley to pace the Owls' swim team on the opening day of the 2015 Rice Invitational meet Friday afternoon at the Owls' Competition Pool.
Swinney's 200-IM time of 2:05.41 is the fastest in Conference USA so far this season. Arkansas' Chloe Hannam won the event with a new facility record time of 2:04.47, part of a strong showing by the Razorbacks on the opening round of the two-day, 18 event meet featuring four regional teams.
Arkansas set three new facility records on the way to winning each of Friday's five events. The Razorbacks hold first place in the team standings with 330 points. Host Rice is in second place with 257 points. Crosstown rival Houston is third with 192 and Incarnate Word is fourth with 136.
Rice true freshman Hanna Huston posted a collegiate-best mark of 4:57.04 to finish third in the 500-freestyle. The rookie from Katy, Texas, then swam the lead leg of the Owls' 800-freestyle relay where the foursome of Huston, Alicia Caldwell, Taylor Armstrong and Jaecey Parham registered a season-best 7:34.90.
Owl senior sprinter Cora McKenzie was third among a field of 36 in the 50-freestyle with a season-best 23.99. Rice's Shelly Patton, Marie-Claire Schillinger, Kiley Beall and Alicia Caldwell combined to take third in the 400-medley relay (3:50.84).
Day two of the Rice Invitational is Saturday with two separate sessions, both of which now have a pair of new start times in an attempt to avoid some inclement weather expected in the area. Saturday's events now begin eight events at 9 am, followed by a final session of five events starting at 12 noon.
