
Ip and Zinko Advance in Abbreviated Regional Action

Katherine Ip and Solomiya Zinko traveled far different paths, but achieved these same result as both advance to the Round of 16 during a rain-shortened second day of action at the USTA/Texas Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Ip moved to the fourth round of action with a 6-3, 6-1 win over TCU's Mia King while ZInko battled back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to advance past 15th seeded Felicity Maltby of Texas Tech, 0-6. 6-3, 11-9. Rain halted play after the first round of Saturday singles action. All doubles action scheduled for Saturday was also postponed.
Ip will face SMU's Vaszilisza Bulgakova and ZInko will meet Houston's Despoina Vogasari, the regional's third seed in matches scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Winners of the first matches on Saturday will advance to the quarterfinals, which are scheduled to be played at 11:30.
In other action, junior Alison Ho and freshman Fernanda Astete dropped their round of 32 matches. Ho fell to 10th seed Domenica Gonzalez of Texas A&M, 6-1. 6-3 while Astete fell to sixth seed Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech, 2-6, 6-4, 10-0.
When doubles action resumes, Ho and Ip are set to face Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner of TCU while Zinko and Emily Smith will meet seventh seed Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici of Texas Tech.
