Owls Rebound on Day Two of SMU Invite

Savannah Durkin, Emily Smith and Solomiya Zinko rebounded from Friday losses to pick up wins in singles to highlight action for Rice on the second day of SMU Invitational at the SMU Tennis Center on Saturday.
Durkin downed Kaysie Hemsdorf of ACU 6-1,6-2 to set up a match with Lois Wagenvoort of UTEP in the White singles consolation final. Smith outlasted Erin Walker of ACU, 6-2. 6-4 to move on to the Red singles consolation final against UTEP's Vivienne Kulicke. Zinko blanked Iva Bago of K-State, 6-0, 6-0 and will face Whitney Williams of ACU in the Blue singles consolation final. Freshman Fernanda Astete, who won her opener on Friday, dropped a tough 7-5, 7-6 decision to on Jessica Birowski of UTA in the Pony flight singles semifinal. Astete will take on Victoria Kareh of Incarnante Word in the third place match on Sunday.
In doubles, Durkin and Smith bounced back from a loss on Saturday to down ACU's Nada Marjanovic and Ansley Boarman in the White doubles flight consolation round and advanced to the consolation final against Rachel Sadiq and Victoria Kareh of Incarnate Word.
Astete and Zinko were edged by Jazmin Britos and Marta Sramkova of Louisiana Tech, 6-4 in the Blue doubles flight semis. They will meet Lucile Pothier and Whitney Williams of ACU in the third place match on Sunday.
