Owls Take Sprint Relay Title at Inaugural National Invitational Meet

The Rice foursome of Cora McKenzie, Rachel Moody, Chelsea Fong and Karina Wlostowska teamed to win the 200-freestyle relay, the first event ever held as part of the new National Swimming Invitational meet on Sunday night in Rockwall, Texas.
The first-year three-day meet, which has picked up the unofficial title of the "Swimming NIT," is open to all Division I provisional qualifiers who did not participate in the NCAA Championships last week. The Rice Owl foursome won the meet's first-ever event with a time of 1:32.91. Grand Canyon University was second in the event (1:34.23), followed by Conference USA swimming rival Western Kentucky (1:34.62).
Rice's other top finishers from the four other events held Sunday include sophomores Taylor Armstrong and Cora McKenzie, who both posted second place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.22) and 50-freestyle (23.36), respectively. Freshman Lauren FitzGerald swam a Rice-best 2:03.63 to take fifth in the 200-individual medley. The Owls then closed out the first day of action with a second place finish in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:41.48.
The meet continues through Tuesday, March 25, with morning preliminary races followed by evening finals.
