LAWRENCE, Kansas - The Rice Owls men's cross country team returned from nearly a month hiatus in style, winning the Kansas Rim Rock Invitational Saturday morning by edging host Kansas, 51-61.
Senior Will Firth led the Owls in the individual standings for a second straight race, placing third in the 8K with a time of 24:43. He was followed by sophomore Adam Davidson, who recorded his second consecutive Top-10 finish by placing seventh in a time of 25:11.
"Will did a good job leading a group of youngster today," Rice men's cross country head coach Jon Warren said. "Davidson is a sophomore and Herrera, Dohner and Ruiz are all freshmen. Will was battling for the win until late in mile five. Davidson was solid throughout and the freshmen all ran impressively. In fact all 10 of the Rice guys had good days as shown by our sixth and seventh finishes. It was a terrific day for Rice cross country."
Just missing out on a Top-10 finish was freshman Ismail Herrera (25:30). Freshman Bradley Dohner also finished in the Top-20 by placing 17th in a time of 25:40. Other Owls earning points were Marco Ruiz (22nd-25:48), Aneesh Sampath (23rd-25:52) and Meron Fessahaie (24th-25:55).
Rice will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to partake in the Crimson Classic on Friday, Oct. 17.
