TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Competing in their final meet before the C-USA Championship, the Rice Owls men's cross country team posted a strong fourth place finish at the Crimson Classic Friday evening hosted by Alabama.
Rice senior Will Firth led the Owls individually with a ninth place finish in the 8K race, crossing the finish line with a mark of 25:22 for his third top-10 finish of the season.
The Owls finished behind only Clemson (123 points), Auburn (130 points) and Georgia Tech (133 points) while beating out regionally ranked teams that included Stephen F. Austin, Tennessee, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and LSU. The meet included 24 teams overall.
"Overall we had a good showing today," Rice men's cross country head coach Jon Warren said. "Will (Firth) didn't feel his best at the start and still put together a very good race. Brad, Adam and Marco had their best races of the season. Aneesh and Steve filled in wonderfully when called upon. It was nice to beat the SEC schools we beat today and to be able to compete well with the other folks that we will see at our regional meet. This was a good meet and the Owls shined when asked."
Rice freshman Bradley Dohner bested his previous 8K time with a 13th place finish in 25:29 to join Firth in the top-20 amongst Owls runners. Adam Davidson (24th-25:42), Marco Ruiz (43rd-26:09), Aneesh Sampath (61st-26:27), James McCreary (66th-26:30), Imran Bell (72nd-26:35) and Griffin Lee (109th-27:08) finished in that order for the Owls.
Next up for the Owls will be the C-USA Championship hosted by North Texas on Nov. 1.
