HOUSTON - Senior Casey Clark won a pair of individual events and swam on the winning sprint-relay to help lead the Rice swimmers to a 132-70 victory over visiting Incarnate Word in the season-opening meet for both teams Friday evening at the Owls' Competition Pool.
Clark, the Conference USA Swimmer of the Meet at the league championships last spring, was again dominant to start the team's new season. The veteran from Spring, Texas, swam a steady 1:51.52 to lead a 1-2 Rice finish with junior Taylor Armstrong in the 200-yard freestyle. Clark soon returned to win the 100-free with a 51.37 that was more than a full second ahead of second place. She then joined Cora McKenzie, Marissa Konicke and Armstrong for a Rice win in the 200-free relay with a 1:37.52.
Armstrong was sound and solid in leading a 1-2 Rice finish with Madison Livingston in the 500-free with times of 5:11.02 and 5:12.84, respectively. Senior Rachel Moody blazed to a 2:20.84 to win the 200-breaststroke (2:20.84).
Two Owl freshmen posted individual wins in their Division I debuts. Jaecey Parham won the 200-individual medley (2:08.61) while the rookie tandem of Kaitlyn Swinney and Kylie Burgess went 1-2 in the rugged 1,00-freestyle with marks of 10:42.65 and 10:47.81, respectively.
Rice senior distance specialist Erin Flanigan sat out her usual spot in the 1,000, but came back strong to win her only race of the night in the 200-butterfly. Flanigan's 2:04.18 butterfly led another 1-2 Owl finish with Meaghan Wisenbaker, who registered an inspirational 2:08.23 competing in her first race in more than a year while being sidelined last season with an injury.
The Blue & Gray foursome of Parham, Moody, Konicke and McKenzie teamed for a 1:46.44 to win the 200-medley relay. Incarnate Word posted individual wins in the 50-freestyle (Lana Nguyen, 23.78) and 200-backstroke (Abby Meyer, 2:07.71).
The Rice swimmers will next be in action on Thursday (Oct. 16). The Owls travel across town to take on the University of Houston in a 4 pm non-conference dual meet.
