Rice's Erin Flanigan swam a 4:21.99 in the morning preliminary round of the 400-meter freestyle Tuesday (June 26) at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The Owl standout from Austin, Tex., finished 85th out of the top 113 women's swimmers in the United States. She did not advance to the 400-freestyle's finals scheduled for later in the evening.
Rice swimming has two Owls competing for a chance to make the 2012 Olympic Team. Neither is finished at the Trials just yet. Flanigan will be back to compete in the 200-meter butterfly on Thursday. Fellow Rice swim star Casey Clark has already raced in the 100-butterfly and next competes in the 200-freestyle on Wednesday.
The U.S. Olympic Swim Trials is structured to run like swim events in the upcoming London Olympics. The trials, under the direction of USA Swimming, is set for June 25 to July 2 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. Entrants will have to advance through two separate rounds for a chance to make the 2012 United States Olympic Swim Team.
The remaining schedules for the Owl duo at the trials is as follows:
June 27 - Clark in 200-meter freestyle
June 28 - Flanigan in 200-meter butterfly
