The Rice men's tennis team started fast, but could not hold off a determined squad from Wake Forest, as the 42nd ranked Deacons won five of six singles matches to down the 33rd ranked Owls, 5-2 at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Friday.
The battle for the doubles point proved to be an indicator of the battle that was ahead between the two teams. Each of the matches lasted 14 games, with the Owls gaining the point when Isamu Tachibana and Christian Saravia outlasted Adam Lee and Zach Leslie to take the match 8-6 and give Rice a 1-0 lead.
After Wake Forest knotted the score 1-1 with a win at No. 2 singles, 82nd ranked Harry Fowler rallied from an early 3-0 deficit in the first set to down 84th ranked Tripper Carleton in straight sets to allow the Owls to regain the lead.
However the Owls would not score again, as the Deacons captured the last four singles matches, three of them extended to third sets in a match that lasted over four hours.
The loss was the first in seven home matches for the Owls, who fell to 10-4 on the season. They will be back in action next weekend when they host the 53rd Rice Invitational next weekend at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
